These guys have played with Rage Against the Machine, are friends with Beck and Fugazi, and have a split 7″ with Rocket from the Crypt. I guess this means that you might know of them, but just in case you don’t, here is a good song of theirs. And don’t let the name scare you away, the Bloodthirsty Butchers are really quite friendly.

Here we have a guitar and bass that are good friends. They seem comfortable with one another and talk to each other in glowing tones that are relaxed but opinionated. In the foreground we have a voice that has just come to terms with itself and is releasing all of its pent up feelings -almost yelling them- from a mountaintop, into the sky or at it.

Looking at this photo, my brain suggests: vocalist, drums (background), bass, guitar. That guy on the far right looks like he’d make the guitar beg for mercy.

And, going to their site, I find that there’s no conveniently captioned photo to let me match names with faces and find out.

    Ah well.

    Hey, thanks for coming by.

From another site of theirs, the members are:
    吉村秀樹 HIDEKI YOSHIMURA (vocal/guitar)
    射守矢雄 TAKESHI IMORIYA (bass)
    小松正宏 MASAHIRO KOMATSU (drum)
    田渕ひさ子 HISAKO TABUCHI(guitar)

And after looking at some concert photos it looks like your brain is mostly right! It seems the order L-R would be Hideki (vocal/guitar), Masahiro (drums [background]), Hisako (guitar), and the only one who looks even remotely bloodthirsty: Takeshi (bass).

  3. Tuwa Says:

The drummer looks like he could count out a song, go take a shower, bake a pie, run errands, and come back to the song and tell you what measure it’s on.

Takeshi, though–I had him pegged for some serious guitar playing, the kind that would make Black Sabbath look downright pastoral.

  4. Red Ruin Says:

Actually, you are quite right! I had the two members on the ends mixed up. You have quite the guitar-player instinct on you. But he does in fact sing as well! Making the real Takeshi (far left) the bassist. I think the hat threw us off maybe…
    Here is the proof.

    Cool!.. Nice work…

I love these guys. Bloodthirsty Butchers are composed of dog bark-like vocals, creative leads by Ms. Hisako, and complimentary drum and bass lines.

Their songs can be long so the trick in enjoying them is to listen and distuingish the verse, chorus, and savor the bridges.

“Banging the Drum” is definately one of my favorites.

Banging the Drum is great indeed. Thanks for coming by =)

[…] Tabuchi herself is a creative dynamo, and with a momentous musical history in the seminal bands Number Girl and Bloodthirsty Butchers in her pocket, she is now plowing her very own path to prominence. […]
