Eksperimentoj is a new project that brandishes the marvelous vocalist, Eugene Wakamikoto. And how can you not love a Japanese band with an Esperanto name?! I guess no one here went to their show on Sunday, but I thought I might as well post the only song I have of theirs, it’s from this compilation, and it’s good. I’m very much looking forward to what these guys have in store.

I can’t help but imagine this song as a nighttime storm out at sea. Rather, it’s being played from high in a tumultuous sky, in the eye of the tempest. It’s the sound of watching the ocean swells and breaks, the churn and the boil. It starts as just a minor undulation in black and white, growing as tenebrous clouds gather and whirl. Soon it’s an outpouring of nature’s emotion from the depths of her murky stomach. It rushes and rolls, out there in that tarry blackness; that endless void that’s so alone but so deadly real.

I love this blog, you have such a great tone in your writing. So relaxed and unforced. I bet you are a wicked person too.

Hey, thanks, I’m flattered! So glad that you like it! I’ll try to keep it up. :-D

Downy BROKE UP? I may have posted this before, but their forth album, which I JUST recently finally got blew me away much more than the second and third. So is that it? What more can you tell me about the different projects the members are now working on?

  4. Red Ruin Says:

Yeah, downy is gone T_T. The new bands they are participating in are: Dhal, Fresh!, Karen, Vola & the Oriental Machine, and Eksperimentoj. That’s as far as I know. I know Dhal and Vola are good, and Eksperimentoj of course, but haven’t been able to find anything by the other 2 yet.

The 4th album is probably my Favorite too. If you have 1-4 though, you might as well get 5 also, which is their live album/DVD combo release. The DVD has the video for “Ichi” on it too, which for me was well worth the price alone.

  5. Benn Says:

I’ll look for 5. I’m sure it’s gotta be somewhere around this country. I didn’t know it existed. Of course I didn’t know there was a 4 either until I found it here.
Thanks for the info on the other bands.

Yeah, if you can’t find it at a store or something, you can always buy it here.

I don’t think Robin is actually a part of eksperimentoj. The vocalist/guitarist for eksperimentoj is Eugene Wakamikoto. He is also in Dhal and does the backup vocals for most of the tracks on the Cacophony album. His voice sounds eerily similar to that of Robin’s, and that is probably what caused the confusion.

Also, from what I’ve heard, Karen is simply a just for fun band and there is currently no plans to release any music.

  8. Red Ruin Says:

Yeah, it’s rather confusing! According to a post on the Eksperimentoj bbs, even the main vocals on dhal songs 3,6,7 and 8 are Eugene O_o. They really do sound extremely similar, but I think that can only be good for us! I’m definitely looking forward to an Eksperimentoj album, no matter who is in the band at the time.

Same! I can’t wait till they release something. Hopefully they can help fill the void that Downy has left behind. Aside from Dhal, I’ve yet to encounter a band whose music is capable of conjuring the same sense of atmosphere that made Downy so wonderful to listen to. Musically, eksperimentoj is definitely within the same vein as Downy (but I’m only judging on the basis of one song). I simply can’t wait for an album.

Any other bands on the compliation album that you enjoyed? I found the Niumun track impressive and I hadn’t hear of them until i got this album. I found out later that the drummer in Niumun is also the drummer for Toddle. Sorta neat.

I agree that Downy’s atmosphere is hard/impossible to replicate. Their reputation for putting their audience in a trance was surely justified.

I was actually listening to the Class Plan B comp last night/this morning while doing some work. I think all the songs are definitely listenable even if not exceptional. I found the zezeco and 54-71 tracks interesting, and of course Niumun, who Eksperimentoj touts as their favorite band, is quite good. I have their “One Track Once” single which I enjoy a lot as well. They remind me of a moodier version of TOE with a more relaxed tempo, very chill without being sleepy.

[…] When I first wrote about Eksperimentoj, the song “solaris” reminded me of a midnight storm in an ocean wilderness; but this album as a whole has a distinctly different ambience, and it’s rather hard to pin down. Even the mix of solaris here is not as huge and looming. It’s clearer, and much more personal. […]
